Challenges and Successes in Data Migration
The data migration for the Oct 1 public beta launch of the BoardX platform involved significant challenges and hard work. Here are a few key areas addressed during the process:
- Migration Planning: A migration planning board was created to identify collection dependencies and determine which collections needed migration.
- Schema Incompatibility: Overcoming schema mismatches between source and target databases required transforming the data to meet new requirements, discarding or renaming fields as necessary.
- ETL Processes: Data was extracted, transformed, and loaded into the new system, resolving inconsistencies along the way.
- Preserving Data Integrity: Ensuring data integrity was vital, especially with large datasets. Validation checks and test migrations verified accuracy, maintaining foreign key relationships in the target database.
- Managing Large Data Volumes: Speed and memory management were key concerns. Batch processing and parallel processing techniques, including tools like p-limit, were used to manage the migration efficiently within the maintenance window.
- Data Cleaning: The migration also served as a data cleaning process, excluding obsolete or test data from early schemas.
This migration required meticulous planning, rigorous testing, and adaptability. By addressing these challenges with strategic solutions, the development team ensured a smooth and successful migration while maintaining data integrity. The team will continue to implement patches to address any remaining minor issues.
